How do computers work? How do these slabs of metal and glass display exactly what I want to see? Could I make these programs myself? These questions remained in the back of my mind ever since I was a little kid and played around on the old family PC. “Hello world”, the words flashed upon my screen. I had just pressed run on my very first program. This was my first coding tutorial, a simple Java text-based course with an online compiler. “Hello World,” the first program for many, is a fitting name to begin the start of a journey and introduction to a new realm.
I was hooked. I wanted to learn more. I wanted to know how to make my own programs. I wanted to know how to make my own games. I wanted to know how to make my own websites. I wanted to know how to make my own apps.
I wanted to know how to make my own world.
Software engineering is a field that has always interested me. An environment that is constantly changing and evolving, and the tools to create anything you can imagine. The mix of creativity and logic needed to be a successful software engineer is what drew me to the field. I always have so much fun playing around with new technologies and learning new languages, I often lose track of time and no other subject has ever made me feel this way.
I am currently a second-year computer science student at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. and have learned a lot in my first year and am excited to learn more. From my ICS classes to my projects, I have learned about the different programming paradigms, data structures, algorithms, and much more. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work on many projects and learn many languages. From winning HACC 2022 off of a whim to developing a note-taking extension for Chrome browsers, I have had many experiences in the field of computer science in just my first year, and I am excited to keep learning and growing.
I plan to continue to develop my portfolio of projects and gain new skills and experiences along the way. Learning how to better develop as a full-stack developer and working in collaboration environments is one of my main goals for the future. I am also interested in artificial intelligence and machine learning and hope to learn more about these fields in the future and how they can be used to solve real-world problems.
